All for the want of a measly $1,000/mo. basic income that would cover housing, healthcare, food so that human beings can have enough surplus attention to even begin thinking about how to become more productive.

Mixed Signals Indicate Popped Hedge Bubble
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/capitalismplusplus/~3/WdhctJv6KJY/mixed-signals-indicate-popped-hedge.html
Excerpts from Asia Times. Please click through to read the full story:
There's something deeply anomalous about a stock market crash at the peak of United States corporate profitability. Nothing like this ever has happened before. Standard and Poor's downgrade of American sovereign debt from the highest, triple-A rating may be the silliest pretext for a stock market crash in world history. America is the only big industrial country in the world that will have more taxpayers rather than fewer when a newly-issued 30-year bond matures. ... why is the market selling an S&P earnings yield of 8% to buy 10-year Treasuries at 2.5%? ... the link between US GDP and corporate earnings is the weakest in history, and 46% of S&P sales are outside the US. ... we have never had stock market crash when stocks earned nearly three times the Treasury bond yield on a current basis. The bubble that has popped here is not American government debt, but the overstretched and overpromised hedge fund industry. It's not the end of the world. It's just the end of the hedge fund industry.

Nature Nanotechnolgy reports:
the conductivity of the biofilm can be tuned by regulating gene expression, and also by varying the gate voltage in a transistor configuration. The conductivity of the nanofilaments has a temperature dependence similar to that of a disordered metal, and the conductivity could be increased by processing.

On Scarcity Logic and Abundance Logistics
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ApprehendingPostscarcity/~3/eGHWmCi7dtk/on-scarcity-logic-and-abundance.html
It used to be that the poor didn't have a voice, because we were uneducated and people could play word games to placate us and make themselves feel justified in the sociopathological hoarding that causes our plight. Not any more. Today, a master's degree is the bachelor's degree of 1980. PhD's are likewise oversupplied to the point of diminishing returns. What we have today is a very large population of educated people for which the manufactured scarcity model of circulating resources simply will not work, any longer. This isn't a matter of debate, it's a matter of observing and comprehending that which is vs. that which we wish were true.
The Scarcity Logic to which most fundamentalists and Tea Party types cling, which won't see the fates of the global poor -- here and abroad -- as equivalent until we all start dying at the same rate, is a major roadblock on the path to sustainable postscarcity. I understand their confusion, but it's not okay to let that confusion set domestic, much less global, policy.
29,000 Dead in Past 90 Days. Inexcusable. Raising taxes on the Top 5% or even Top 1% so that we, as a nation, can continue to provide the humanitarian aid that makes us a humanitarian people is not a long term solution; but it is better than doing nothing, until we can move forward into a reasonable Mixed Global Economy that works for everyone.
This is a circulation problem, it's about Abundance Logistics. One key reason for the logistical lockup is the common misguided thinking that proclaims those in western relative poverty should feel grateful, because they aren't in the absolute poverty of Somalians. Believe me, we're grateful; and the only reason anyone could possibly believe that we are not equally emotionally traumatized and desperate is that you've never walked a single step, let alone a mile, in our shoes.

Ayn Rand's Ultimate Oligarch Central Planning Wet Dream Comes True
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/capitalismplusplus/~3/mtd_YyVIsHM/ayn-rands-ultimate-oligarch-central.html
Via P2PFoundation (@mbauwens) and Global Guerrillas (@johnrobb):
The answer is that an extreme concentration of wealth at the center of our market economy has led to a form of central planning. The concentration of wealth is now in so few hands and is so extreme in degree, that the combined liquid financial power of all of those not in this small group is inconsequential to determining the direction of the economy. As a result, we now have the equivalent of centralized planning in global marketplaces. A few thousand extremely wealthy people making decisions on the allocation of our collective wealth. The result was inevitable: gross misallocation across all facets of the private economy.
NOT because of government or democracy or collectivist cooperation as Rand ranted; quite the contrary, all of this is because her very own beloved industrial era capitalism ran it's full course; and ran it quite well in bringing humanity out of the agrarian age, thank you very much. However, unchecked by democracy, and unbalanced by an adaptive mixed-economy model:
The result of [industrial market capitalism's] central planning in the US has finally hit the wall. The list of problems is endless. The misallocations range from the dangerous $600 trillion derivatives market to the destruction of the US middle class.
It's not time to hate or blame. We were all complicit. It's time to admit we were wrong, misinformed, fooled, or just not paying attention. It's time to increment: Capitalism++

The Great American Poverty Tour
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ApprehendingPostscarcity/~3/EEdn2evtNaE/great-american-poverty-tour.html
Is this the model we expect from the Greatest Society On Earth? Or this? Or this?
Beginning Friday, Cornel West and PBS host Tavis Smiley will take to the road with a 15-city “Poverty Tour” to raise awareness about the plight of impoverished people.
They’ll visit soup kitchens, public housing projects, and farms. They’ll stay with low-income families and along the way they’ll try to assess whether Obama’s policies are working.
“This is a way to galvanize as opposed to complain,” West said. “Both parties have rendered the poor invisible. The only thing we have left is to dramatize their plight.”
It's long past time to grow up and out of emotionally hijacked redistribution rhetoric.

Real Names Are Not Required For Real Socializing. Um, No Duh, Mom.
http://michael.silverton.palo-alto.ca.us/packets/1760/#utm_source=feed&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=feed
Yawwwwn. So it’s ground hog day all over again with tired debate over Accountable Anonymity and Online Identity Management in general. Really? This is a valid topic of conversation among educated, intelligent interwebs inhabitants in 2011?
If I had an decent CPC for every time I’ve had to defend Bruce Schneier’s 2006 infinitely logical position on accountable anonymity – a position I independently began fighting for as early as 2001, if you must know – I probably wouldn’t bother posting another blathering blog entry on such a long-expired and utterly resolved basic topic.
Please, our collective intelligence and attention are far too valuable to squander on this again. Let’s not continue wasting valuable extended cognition resources on yet another naval-gazing rehash of this long resolved, non-problem.
We desperately need some fresh, new global conversation conductors for this online orchestra. Conductors who will whisk us past superfluous accidentals and distractions and get on with the opus of fixing What’s Most Broken on the planet:
The future that is already here — and nowhere near sufficiently evenly distributed.
This challenge, along with climate change, is arguably the urgent matter of our era. We need entirely new ways of circulating value throughout a global economic circulatory system that is rapidly transitioning to a social capital substrate. As tweeted earlier:
“… as quantum physics differs from newtonian, so does social capital growth differ from industrial capital decline …”
People and communities are suffocating at the economic capillary level. This debt ceiling theater — focusing all too scarce and shallow public attention on histrionic, superfluous cardiac bypass procedures — won’t do a thing to support or supply nutrient-starved capillaries.
Please, let’s have the courage to finally move forward to solving the big problems, building upon the best of what’s worked and discarding all that has not worked well; setting forth upon a global course correction, an #EarthOS reboot worthy of the best of our collective intelligence; accelerating change to cultural escape velocity sufficient to finally begin apprehending postscarcity. At the very least, there is no further excuse to postpone ending poverty, beyond our lifetimes.
Avoidance of our fundamental, inter-generational responsibilities will not make them go away. The world has dramatically changed because our understanding has so dramatically changed. What we once thought was a cold, barren universe is in fact full of water, oxygen, and we ourselves are made of the stuff of stars. Amidst all these no longer shocking realizations, isn’t it time to grow up and be responsible, Earthlings?

Economies are Circulatory Systems
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/capitalismplusplus/~3/_ES4SR2ViQs/economies-are-circulatory-systems.html
Currencies go into and out of circulation, not distribution. It's not about redistribution at all, lunkheads, it's about sustainable global resource circulation. If you clot up 43% of your blood in 1% of your body, it doesn't matter where the clot is; the whole body is going down. People and societies are complex adaptive biological systems, not rigorous, reductionist mathematical formulations.
It's not about the theoretical mathematics of economics. It's about the everyday biology realities of human existence, lack, homelessness, hunger, and the persistent threat thereof, which strips economic agents -- American, and global citizens -- of anything even remotely resembling democratic, free market bargaining power.

Interested? Terrified? A little of both? What if we turned this whole exercise on it’s head with a KickStarter project to make this happen? Could such a key strategic national and global security capability be developed via Open Source? What would Paul Baran say and do?

He obeyed every word. “No new taxes” on the insane sociopathological hoarders.
Paul Krugman:
by demonstrating that raw extortion works and carries no political cost, it will take America a long way down the road to banana-republic status.
Make no mistake about it, what we’re witnessing here is a catastrophe on multiple levels.
In the long run, however, Democrats won’t be the only losers. What Republicans have just gotten away with calls our whole system of government into question. After all, how can American democracy work if whichever party is most prepared to be ruthless, to threaten the nation’s economic security, gets to dictate policy? And the answer is, maybe it can’t.
Maybe the fact that we let people do this to us in our own neighborhoods every day is contributing to the problem. This isn’t okay. Lying, cheating, stealing, hoarding, mean people suck and perhaps it’s time to start standing up to them, up close and personal. Thing is, there’s no way we can go it alone. If ever there were a call for concerted systemic #mindap #cooperation #collaboration, this is it.

What if our world is not what we have thought? A #PoisedRealm
http://michael.silverton.palo-alto.ca.us/packets/1708/#utm_source=feed&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=feed
“Heraclitus taught us 2700 years ago that the universe “bubbles forth.” For the becoming of the biosphere and all of life, we hold that Hericlitus was right. Life bubbles forth.”
Depending upon your context, academic predisposition, and frame of reference, the following bio-ascendant worldview is presented for your half-baked, pretzel-cogitation enjoyment, or potentially for a mind-blowing, reductionism toppling, existential revelation. Excerpted from Lifeboat News, by way of +Jef Allbright.
Stuart Kauffman and Giuseppe Longo:
… we provide strong grounds to say that the long held belief that there is a theory entailing all that happens in the universe is false. No Law entails the evolution of life. If so, reductionism is false, and we must think anew. Our world is not what we have thought.
Quantum mechanics has, in effect, replaced the determinism of the classical physical world with indeterminism.
… the fact that quantum mechanics and classical physics in the form of General Relativity have NOT been united since 1927, while both play a role in biological evolution, is consistent with the possibility that the evolution of the biosphere is ENTAILED BY NO LAW AT ALL.
A collectively autocatalytic set is an example of a Kantian Organized Being. The parts … exist in the universe for and by means of the whole which organizes their catalytic behaviors, while the whole exists in the universe for and by means of the parts.
… the Kantian whole remain as a self sustaining, partly quantum, partly classical, perhaps partly Poised Realm, process … we cannot mathematize beforehand the becoming of the biosphere.
In short, we can have NO LAWS OF MOTION for the evolving Kantian wholes literally co-creating the biosphere.
We are at a terminus of Reductionism, the belief that there must be a law or set of laws “down there” that entails all that becomes in the universe.

What's the best way for a public figure to utilize Google+ Hangouts?
http://www.quora.com/Whats-the-best-way-for-a-public-figure-to-utilize-Google+-Hangouts#ans623533
Michael Silverton voted up an answer.Shane Kittelson, Google Parasite ie. SEO Analyst Eventually, I predict that Google will add the ability for a Hangout to have viewers and participants for just such an occasion. This would allow public figures to have live debates where thousands of people could watch, but only a select few could participate in the video conversation. There would need to be some kind of chat interface for the non-partiipants in order to keep them engaged. If they add this functionality, perhaps the moderator could select people from the crowd of viewers to participate briefly, and then boot them once their question has been asked. I think this would be an excellent feature and would surely be utilized by many public figures and media organizations.See question on Quora
